Close to Pozzuoli, Cumae is in the volcanic area of the Phlegraean fields (Campi Flegrei), it is an ancient Greek city. The volcanic activity was very intense here several thousands years ago, the Campi Flegrei correspond at a main crater of 15 km diameter.
Cumae was one of oldest and of most far of the Greek colonies of Magna Grecia, one believes it was founded towards 740 bC. It due to defend oneself on several occasions against the attacks of the Etruscans, those of Capua.
